Obituary of George Snell

George Reinoehl Snell died on January 22, 2018 at the age of 100. He was born in Lebanon, PA, son of Helen Reinoehl and Harry Raymond Snell. He was predeceased by his three siblings. In his teens, he embarked on the first step in his career carving marionettes, designing and producing a local touring marionette show. Shortly after high school, he became Producer and Director of Green Hills Summer Theatre, located in Reading, PA. His theatre went “dark” when he was called for duty in WWII. He served four and a half years in combat. Assigned to the 2nd Armored Division (Hell on Wheels), the troops landed on Utah Beach and battled their way to being the first American troops to enter Berlin. Captain Snell retired from the Army Reserves in 1953. Returning from the military, he entered the field of Communications as a Director of live television. He produced and directed over 6,000 live telecasts from various locations, including KDKA Television in Pittsburgh, PA, to New York City market. In NYC, he became associated with Teleprompter/TelePro Industries. In 1965, he and his wife embarked in establishing their own business, George R. Snell Associates, Inc. located in Mountainside, NJ. Here, he designed and manufactured the world’s most powerful projectors, incorporating the HMI light source. He incorporated this feature into his design of audio visual systems throughout the world, including the military, AT&T Headquarters in NYC to the Crystal Cathedral in CA. He remained in this business for 35 years, at which time they moved to retirement at TidePointe, Hilton Head. Throughout his life, he has always involved with church Affiliations. He served as Head Liturgical Deacon at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Summit, NJ for forty years. In Hilton Head, he was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church and at TidePointe served as assistant to the pastor for their ecumenical church services. During his residency at TidePointe, Captain Snell received the French Jubilee of Liberty Medal, commemorating his service in the Battle of Normandy in WWII. He is survived by his wife, Dottie (Tindle) of 67 years and daughter Suzi, wife of Thomas J. Reed. Services will be held at Beaufort National Cemetery on Monday, January 29, 2018 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hilton Head Humane Association or Hospice Care of the Lowcountry.
