Obituary of June McIntyre

June McIntyre was born in Rockwood, Pennsylvania on April 30, 1931 to Charles and Sara McIntyre. She grew up in Rockwood where she dreamed of being a nurse. While in high school, she was a majorette in addition to participating in many of the activities to include the lead of the year book. She was very proud of the fact that she produced the first hard cover year book ever for Rockwood High School. June graduated in 1949 and went to nursing school at Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. Even though she perceived this as a big step going from a very small town to a big city, June excelled in nurse’s training graduating third in her class in 1952 with an RN. After nursing school, June went to work for Presbyterian Hospital as an operating room nurse and eventually moved to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Pittsburgh where she had a highly successful 35-year nursing career. During this time, June worked in a variety of programs to include the open-heart program where she ran the heart lung machine. She also worked as a floor nurse, ran the emergency room, worked in a psychiatric hospital associated with the VA and then eventually ended up in administration where she rose to become the Assistant Chief Nurse. During her career as a nurse, June also obtained a B.S. degree from LaRoche College and a M.S. degree from Duquesne University, both in Pittsburgh. Also during this time, June joined the US Army Reserves as a nurse and rose to the rank of full Colonel. She also took care of her elderly mother, Sara, and was a loving sister to Janice and Joan as well as a loving aunt to her niece and nephew, Leanne and Todd Henry. She was also very caring toward other family members to include Mae McIntyre in California when she underwent successful heart surgery at the age of 88. After retiring from the VA, June and Janice followed Joan and Albert Henry to Hilton Head South Carolina where the they first lived in Sun City and then later at Abbey Glen. While in Hilton Head, June and Janice both volunteered at the First Presbyterian Church, the museum, and the Bargain Box. When Joan became elderly, June and Janice visited her regularly in Brookdale Hilton Head Village where June eventually moved after Janice’s passing. June died in her sleep on August 6th after a short illness in Memorial Hospital in Savannah. She is survived by her niece Leanne Henry and nephew Todd Henry as well as many cousins. Visitation for June will be Monday, August 13 from 10am-12noon at The Island Funeral Home and Crematory with a funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head at 1:30 pm Monday. Burial will take place in Beaufort National Cemetery on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at 2:00 pm.
