Obituary of Barbara M. Schacker

Barbara Marjorie Schacker of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, died suddenly, but peacefully in her sleep at her home on June 28, 2018. She is survived by her children: Lisa A. Null, William S. Null (Lauren Thaler) and Michael C. Null (Paula Allen Greene); grandchildren: Jake Null, Danielle Ben-David (Yaniv Ben-David), Lauren Holdeman, William Holdeman, Miki Piccioni and Evan Thaler-Null; and great-grandchildren: Eden, Tal & Lily Ben-David, Aryanna & Alayah Holdeman, Marc & Selene Piccioni, and Camari & Camyia Woods. She also leaves behind her sister, Carole Kass, nieces, Ruth Kass (Bryan Lever) and Sara Kass (Mikah Zakem), nephew, Michael Kass, grandnephew, Gavin Lever, and grandniece, Kira Zakem. In addition, she is survived by close friends in Hilton Head Island and elsewhere with whom she shared an active and engaged social, intellectual and political life. Her youthful demeanor, energy and keen wit belied Barbara’s chronological age. She was seen early each morning walking a mile or more around The Rookery community at Hilton Head Plantation. She had an insatiable desire to be well informed, reading extensively and attending World Affairs and other classes up until her last days. People counted on her for inspiration and confirmation of the importance of enjoying each day. She will be sorely missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome M. Schacker, and her granddaughter, Marjorie Elizabeth Holdeman. Born in Sharon, PA on October 18, 1928, she grew up in Brooklyn, New York with her parents, Irving E. Black & Sara (Schwartz) Black, and younger sister Carole. Barbara attended James Madison High School, New York University (B.A.) and Queens College of the City University of New York (M.S.Ed.). She taught English on a full and part-time basis in high schools including Great Neck, Valley Stream South and Port Washington, N.Y. Private ceremonies were held in Hilton Head Island, S.C. and Sleepy Hollow, NY.
