Obituary of Clifford G. Allen

Clifford G. Allen, Jr. 84 Clifford G. Allen, Jr. of Hilton Head Island, SC., formerly of Bryn Mawr, PA., died on June 26th, 2018. He is survived by a daughter, Laurie Marsden, a son-in-law Donald D. Marsden, Jr. of Richmond, VA and a son, Clifford B. Allen (“Ford”) and daughter-in-law Lee, of Hilton Head Island, SC. He also leaves six grandchildren: Hannah Carter (Timmy), Christiana Botticello (Thomas) and Jeremiah Marsden, Chelsea, Shelby and Clifford G. Allen, III (“Case”). Born on November 4th, 1933 in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of Grace Beatrice York Allen and Clifford Geddes Allen. He graduated from Old Trail School, Bath, Ohio, the Choate Rosemary Hall School, Wallingford, CT. and Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH. Upon graduation from Dartmouth he married Judith Anne Bellows in Akron, Ohio. He spent four years with Procter & Gamble and six years with General Tire before entering the life insurance business in Philadelphia with Connecticut General. In 1996, Cliff and Judy moved from their home in Bryn Mawr to Hilton Head Island, SC. This move coincided with Judy and Cliff starting a new business serving private secondary schools with health insurance tailored for their student body. In his later years, this work was part of Cliff’s passion and led him to eventually transition the business with Judy and considered it a tremendous blessing to be able to pass on the business to his son Ford. Cliff was active in many organizations throughout his insurance career, including numerous estate planning councils, the national association of life underwriters and local chapters of CLU. Cliff (Cliffy, Buster) will be remembered fondly by family and friends for: his love of Dartmouth, a good dry martini, Glenn Miller, the Cleveland Indians or Browns, and for the joy apparent in his red-faced laugh and ease with which he was able to laugh at himself. Long before Facebook and other social media prompts, Cliff was devoted to faithfully calling his friends each and every year on their birthdays, and in his daily life counted it a great blessing to be able to help those in need and made a concerted effort to do so. Cliff valued fellowship and the strength and meaning found in community and formed a Thursday night dinner group at Tide Pointe that continues to meet even now. Cliff was a dedicated husband and father and was fully committed to loving friends and family and remembering to seek the Lord’s help and strength to be of service to all. Cliff never met a stranger. His heart broke in 2008 with the passing of his beloved wife, Judy, of 52 years, In the years following her death, he was blessed with the devoted companionship and support of a second wife, Anita Montalbano (who passed away in 2015) and most recently his devoted friend, Toni Chapman. The common thread throughout all of his relationships was his unwavering commitment to Christ. His favorite way to stay the day was spending time in the devotional publication “Our Daily Bread”. He is a past member of the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, the Wayne Presbyterian Church, Waynesborough Country Club, Paoli, PA, the Union League of Philadelphia, the rotary clubs of Wayne and Bryn Mawr, PA. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Church (50 Pope Avenue, Hilton Head Island, SC) on Friday July 6th, 2018 at 2pm. A reception will follow at the church. All are invited. Interment will be held in a private ceremony in Akron, Ohio at a later date.
