Obituary of Dale Raymond Johnson

Dale Raymond Johnson died May 23, 2018. He was born in Morris, Illinois on July 5, 1933. He was the son of Raymond Otto Johnson and Evelyn Mae Johnson. He attended the University of Illinois and achieved a Bachelor in Architecture in 1957 and a Master in Architecture in 1959. Dale was an Instructor in Design at the University of Illinois before accepting the position of Project Designer at Perry Shaw Hepburn & Dean in Boston, Massachusetts. He continued his career at Smith Hinchman & Grylls Associates, Inc., Detroit, Michigan where he designed numerous award winning buildings. His buildings were published in Architectural Record and Progressive Architecture magazines. In 1977 he was appointed to the position of Associate and Corporate Head of Design. Dale was a Registered Architect in Massachusetts, Michigan, South Carolina and held a National Council of Architectural Registration Boards certificate. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects where he served on the National Committees on Design and Urban Design. He was also a member of the Michigan Society of Architects, Urban Land Institute, Society of College and University Planners and the Engineering Society of Detroit. In 1981 Dale opened The Johnson Partnership on Hilton Head Island, SC where he designed numerous buildings for the next thirty years. Dale was a life long Chicago Cubs baseball fan. He was an avid traveler with a particular affection for the architecture, culture, people, food and wine of Italy. He loved to cook for friends and was always the kitchen mastermind at family gatherings. He enjoyed golf for many years. Dale is survived by Trudie, his wife of forty five years, his step daughter, Christian (Lance) Acanfrio of Waldwick, NJ, granddaughters Grace and Charlotte, his sister Lynn Sampson of Morris, Illinois, nephew, David and niece, Karen and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be at a future date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Association. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory.
