Obituary of Thomas Jackson Humphries

Thomas Jackson Humphries, Jr., 71, died peacefully at his home on Hilton Head Island, SC, on May 8, 2018 following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Tom was born in Roanoke, Virginia on October 21, 1946. He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Jackson Humphries. He is survived by his three siblings, Dorothy H. Lawrence and husband Howard, John William Humphries and wife Janis, and Katie H. Highfill and husband Jeff of Roanoke. His survivors include numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Tom grew up in Roanoke and attended schools in Salem, VA. He graduated from the University of Richmond. His career in the construction industry started when he was employed as construction manager at Ryan Homes in Washington, DC. During this time, he was a proud member of the US Army Reserve. Tom founded and successfully operated Humphries Inc. on Hilton Head Island for over forty years until he retired. He took pride in having built many fine homes there. Tom treasured his family and many friends. He was a lifelong bird hunter, fisherman, and tennis player. He was judged as “highly competent” in these sports. He took quiet delight in teaching his nephews “how it should be done.” Tom exhibited a crusty exterior, which was only a façade for a kind man with a big heart. His love of animals included his four-legged neighbor “Sophie.” Donations in Tom’s memory can be made to Hilton Head Humane Association (http://www.hhumane.org) or to the charity of your choice. The family is planning a Memorial gathering in his memory at a later date. Arrangements by the Island Funeral Home and Crematory. islandfuneralhome.com.
