Obituary of Janice M. Strokes

Janice Stokes, a long-time resident and widow of the late Ralph W. Stokes, passed away on May 6, 2018 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Ashland Kentucky, Jan moved to Hilton Head from Stony Brook, NY in 1977. She lived on Baynard Park Road with her husband, a former Pan Am captain, until his death in 1986. More recently she lived in the Tide Pointe community and at Palm Meadows Court. Mrs. Stokes attended Indiana University and the University of Kentucky where she met her future husband. She developed a love – and talent – for flower arranging and was an organizing member of the Plantation Garden Club and the Garden Club Council of Hilton Head Island. She also served as president of the Garden Club Council from 1988-89 in addition to other leadership appointments. Mrs. Stokes helped organize the first Altar Guild at St. Andrew by the Sea Methodist Church and was responsible for altar flower arrangements for more than a decade. She remained an active member of the church until health issues limited her participation. The daughter of John S. Ingram, Sr. and Inez Clevenger Ingram, Jan was also a charter member of the Captain William Hilton chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She proudly served on the organization’s administrative board and was appointed Regent for 1991-92 and represented Hilton Head at the group’s national convention in Washington, DC. Mrs. Stokes was also a member of the Hilton Head Yacht Club and a founding member of the Hilton Head Gourmet Club. Jan had one brother, John Ingram, Jr. and one sister, Shirley Immel (both Deceased). Mrs. Stokes is survived by her oldest son; Jeffrey Wallace Stokes of Hilton Head, SC, his wife Kathleen and her two grandchildren; Brian Jeffrey and Kevin Joel Stokes. She is also survived by her second child, Ronald Scott Stokes of Charlotte, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the charity or healthcare facility of your choice in Jan’s name. Islandfuneralhome.com.
