My late husband John (Tony) and I knew Mary Jo and Dick since 2002. We frequently got together at our houses or a restaurant before Dick passed away in 2004.
I admired Mary Jo for her independence and her zest for living. In addition to being active in several local organizations—including the Women’s Club, the Out to Lunch Bunch, the League of Women Voters, and the World Affairs Council of Hilton Head—she was a patron of the arts. She volunteered at the Coastal Arts Theater. She also was active in her parish, St. Francis by the Sea. We often saw each other at Mass.
She had traveled extensively—the Caribbean, Europe, Australia and New Zealand—and I enjoyed listening to her talk about her experiences in far-flung places.
She had a lively mind. She was interested in current events, and she was an advocate for social justice.
She enjoyed playing bridge. She was an avid golfer until her knees gave out.
She dressed with flair—outfits as well as accessories. She maintained her home beautifully and had excellent taste. Amazingly, until about five years ago she did her own housework!
She was a gracious hostess. I always enjoyed our conversations.
I shall miss her.
