Betty deHebreard

Obituary of Betty Jean deHebreard

Betty was born September 21, 1942, to Herman and Dorothy Prange in Indianapolis, IN, a first generation American, which she was so proud of.  Her German heritage and German family remained a dominant point of pride throughout her entire life. It was in kindergarten where she met her future husband Pete.  They went on their first date in junior high school and would have been married for 57 years on January 18, 2021.

After graduating from Southport High School, she attended Indiana University, where she graduated with a B.S. in Business Education.  She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.  The lasting friendships she made at Alpha Chi continued throughout her life with regular, lively reunions in Arizona, South Carolina, and Michigan.

Married in 1964, Betty was blessed with three wonderful girls, Kristen, Tracey and Tricia. Her oldest daughter Kristen has been waiting for her in Heaven, what a beautiful reunion for them. Betty was the much-loved Nana to seven grandchildren. They simply adored her and in return, they were her world.

Settling in Columbus, Indiana, after living in Rochester, NY, Brazil, South America and Naperville, IL, Betty opened a women’s designer boutique, Great Things. She developed a love of style while working with some of her best friends at Great Things. She cherished her fun-filled memories of frequent buying trips with her friends in New York and Chicago.

At 49 years old, a job opportunity took them to Winnipeg, MB, for the next 13 years.  It was there that Betty learned to play golf, snow ski, and began modeling with Panache Modeling Agency.  They belonged to St. Charles Country Club and developed lifelong friendships. With their friends, they became avid bicyclists, taking bicycle trips throughout Europe, Great Britain, South Africa and California.

After years of vacationing in Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island, SC, Betty and Pete chose beach, sunshine, and golf for retirement. As a member of Sea Pines Country Club, she continued to play golf, became a keen Bridge player and led an active social life. Betty was a member of Providence Church where she served on Session and rarely missed a Sunday service.

Betty has given her family the greatest gift of all-she was an example of genuine warmth and kindness with a zest for adventure. She lived her life with a positive attitude and she always had a smile on her face. What made her smile most were her grandchildren: Claire, Katherine, William, James Culliton and Anna, Ellie, Chase Barlow.

She is survived by her husband, Pete of Hilton Head, SC, her daughters, Tracey Culliton (Steve) of Darien, CT, and Tricia Barlow (Michael) of Cincinnati, OH and seven grandchildren.  She is also survived by brothers, Richard Prange (Mary Jo) and David Prange (Sandy), both of Hilton Head Island, SC.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Hilton Head, P.O. Box 22267, Hilton Head Island, SC, 29925, Memory Matters, P.O. Box 22330, Hilton Head Island, SC, 29925 or Providence Presbyterian Church, 171 Cordillo Parkway, Hilton Head Island, SC, 29928.

Betty’s family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the Crescent Hospice  and Canterfield of Bluffton staff for their loving and compassionate care.
