I knew Felix for over 40 years. My company UniWorld, (UWG) is the nation’s oldest surviving Black advertising agency in the world, celebrating 52 years so far. We would never have made it without Felix. He was more than a lawyer to us. He was my deep and abiding friend. But most of all —he was a father, grandfather, and godfather to many of my employees, their children, and even some grandchildren. We share everyone’s sorrow and will miss Felix.
Felix loved to tell me that he knew more about my staff than I did. He took great care and interest in our professional and personal lives. I am blessed with many memorable times with Felix. He and Elizabeth took credit for getting me married! Sylvia and I joined them on a cruise to the Orient. We went to China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan. In their Hong Kong stateroom, I proposed to Sylvia! We enjoyed many lunches with Felix at Harvard Club here in New York. He convinced us to vote for Obama because of Harvard. We all know how much Felix loved Harvard, his alma mater! He loved New York City too. Whenever he came to town, between his opera concerts, family, and friends, we would get together. He even played chess on the Harlem sidewalks with locals. Another wonderful memory is that Felix was a good dancer. At our company Christmas parties, Felix was always a willing partner to join my staff on the dance floor to do the Electric Slide!
Felix loved our colorful world. He oftentimes was the only White man in a room full of Black, Brown, and Tan faces. He was just as at ease with UWG’s Black historic notables, like Tuskegee Airmen, Civil Rights leaders like John Lewis, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Hip Hop stars, sports figures, politicians, lawyers, as he was with everyday people. He was down to earth in the best way. When I say that Felix was a family man, I mean he treated people like family and was part of our family! We know that he had his own family. He told us all about them. I feel like I know them too. But he had another family with us. When he arrived to work at my office, it was a celebration! My staff would cater to him, bring him coffee, and regale him with stories. Besides the real, hard work he did for us, he helped my employees with all kinds of problems from complaints about me to legal disputes, domestic problems, and starting new businesses of their own.
Upon hearing of Felix’s transition, we all sighed with sadness. One executive said: “I can’t help but shed some tears and stop to say a quiet prayer for Felix. May he rest in eternal peace. We know how dear Felix was to Byron. Theirs was a true friendship with deep respect and love for one another. We dealt with the most unusual and bizarre harassment cases at UWG. How we survived those years was because of Felix.” I agree with this statement. So, I say, Well done. Rest in Peace, my friend.
With love, Byron & Sylvia Lewis, New York

My wife Karen & I were neighbors of Felix and Elizabeth in Port Royal Plantation for many years. And I commuted with Felix back and forth from Hilton Head Island to NYC during most of that time. We spent so much time together in airplanes and airports over the years. Felix was a great friend and a true inspiration. I will really miss him. I'm out of town this week and so sorry to miss the service on Thursday. His was truly a Life Well Lived!
