Obituary of Phyllis Hess Essler
October 1, 1929 – October 30, 2021
Phyllis Essler, 92, passed away after a short illness surrounded by her loving family. She was born and raised in Hellertown, PA then went on to get her college degree as an English major at Syracuse University.
In 1955 Phyllis met and married the love of her life Dick. Her sense of adventure took them around the world enjoying travel as well as living in Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and Mexico. In 1991 after Dick’s retirement, they made a life on Hilton Head Island, SC. Phyllis was an avid reader as well as master bridge player. She always loved a good game! In her earlier years she also enjoyed playing tennis. Travelling has been a life time passion and shopping has been a lifetime habit - she was always known for her sense of style! Phyllis will be remembered for her zest of life and easy going nature. She touched so many and will forever be in our hearts.
Phyllis and Dick were married for just over 60 years and devoted to family. She is survived by their children Cindi Chess, Doug Essler (Sharon), and Pam Essler. She is also survived by grandchildren Zane Chess, Blake Essler, Lauren Attkisson (Brent), and Marleigh Essler, as well as great grandchildren West and Wyatt Attkisson.
A private graveside service will be held at Six Oaks Cemetery in Sea Pines at 1:30pm on Friday, November 5, 2021. Guests will be received immediately afterwards for a celebration of life at Long Cove Club, 399 Long Cove Drive, from 2:30 – 4pm.
