Obituary of Reverend Manuel Holland

Bluffton, South Carolina - Rev. Manuel Holland, age 92, passed from this earthly existence at home on August 2, 2022, following a long illness. He is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Olive Holland. He is survived by his stepson, David Lowe, granddaughter, Jessica Lowe, and his three children from a previous marriage: Charles Holland, Elizabeth Holland, and Robert Holland.

Rev. Holland was the Pastor Emeritus of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Lowcountry (UUCL) in Bluffton. He came as the part-time minister of the Unitarian Fellowship of Hilton Head Island in 1981. When the present building was built in Bluffton, the name of the congregation was changed to its current name, Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Lowcountry. Rev. Holland served the congregation for 32 years. He and Mrs. Holland also owned a successful insurance and investment company on Hilton Head for many years.

Rev. Holland's compassion and devotion to social justice and service rose out of his childhood experiences of grinding poverty and having known people from varying backgrounds and cultures.

He was passionate about social justice, and he strove to uplift those who are oppressed, impoverished, and without a voice. He was active in the Lions Clubs International for decades and served as District Governor in several districts. He served as a Unitarian minister in Massachusetts, North Carolina, and here in the Lowcountry. Rev. Holland helped start Hospice of the Lowcountry, as well as the Community Foundation of Hilton Head. He and Mrs. Holland served on the Hilton Head MLK Birthday Celebration Committee for many years.

His last message to the congregation and the community asked that we love one another, for, in the end, that is all we have.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, August 7, 3:30 PM, at UUCL 110 Malphrus, Bluffton. Please dress as you are comfortable, and know that bright colors are welcome as part of the celebration of Rev. Holland's life.

The family requests contributions to Doctors Without Borders, Feeding America, or The International Rescue Committee in lieu of flowers.
