Obituary of Neil Meighan

Neil Meighan died peacefully at his home on May 24, 2023 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He was 91 years old. Mr. Meighan was born in Hartford, CT on August 1, 1931 to parents Cornelius and Mildred Meighan.

Mr. Meighan graduated from St. Thomas Seminary in 1949 and the University of Hartford in 1953 with a BS degree in Chemistry. He enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War and served as a bacteriologist/ chemist at Fort Hood Hospital in Killeen, Texas. He married Philomena Pensiero in 1954. Upon discharge from the Army he joined Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, a division of United Technologies in East Hartford, CT. He worked there for 37 years in a number of capacities in research and control, including Chief for chemical and metallurgy of material, parts, and processes for the company and its vendors. For three years, he also worked as an adjunct professor at the University of Hartford in engineering and chemistry. In his final years of work, he was President and CEO of Homogeneous Metals, Inc in Clayville, NY, a subsidiary of United Technologies. He retired to Hilton Head in 1992. He was an active member of Knights of Columbus and served on the Board of Programs for Exceptional People (PEP). He was an avid golfer. His fondest memories were playing games he created with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be remembered for his generosity and his sense of humor.

Mr. Meighan is predeceased by his parents and is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Philomena, his son Dennis Meighan and his wife Kathryn of Naples, FL, Martin Meighan and his wife Elizabeth of Cornelia, GA and his sister Ann Doherty of Fayetteville, NY. He is also survived by his grandchildren Ryan Meighan and his wife Taisa of Smyrna, GA, Taryn Pray and her husband Bradley of Nolensville, TN, Patrick Meighan and his wife Stephanie of Lutherville Timonium, MD, Caitlin McMahon and her husband O’Brien of Chicago, IL, and Carolyn Ross and her husband Miles of Youngsville, NC. He had eight great grandchildren Brynn Pray, Harrison Pray, Charlotte Pray, Mila Meighan, Nora Meighan, Bodie McMahon, Reece McMahon and Gwyneth Meighan.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church on June 26, 2023 at 10:00 am. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mr. Meighan’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to the St. Francis Catholic School of Hilton Head, SC.
