Obituary of Lyman D. Wooster

Lyman D. Wooster of the Cypress died at the age of 100 on July 28, 2018, after a long wonderful life. He was born September 22, 1917 in Hays, Kansas to the late Dr. L. Dwight and Mary O. Wooster. He moved to Hilton Head Island, SC in 1988 from Fairfax, VA. Lyman held degrees from Ft. Hays State University and the University of Pennsylvania, the latter where he also taught political science. He was a graduate of the National War College, class of 1969. During World War II he served in the Army in the African, Pacific, and European theaters, and was recalled to active duty for two years during the Korean conflict. Upon release from active duty, Lyman entered the civil service in Washington, DC and served in Army and Defense Department Intelligence, where he was an analyst of Soviet military and political affairs, and in the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. He ended his government career in that agency. Throughout his adult life, Lyman was active in civil affairs. As a resident of Fairfax, VA he was president of the city school board, the county library board, and the Norther Virginia Tennis League. On Hilton Head Island, he was a member of the Community Roundtable and served on the Board of Directors of the Hilton Head Plantation POA. He was also on the Board of Directors of the local bridge association and of the South Carolina Bridge Association. He had been a member of the Spring Lake Tennis Club, and at one time held senior rankings in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern Tennis Associations. He was an occasional contributor of commentaries to The Island Packet, and in 2005 he became a volunteer at the Heritage Library where he engaged in research and wrote articles on the history of Hilton Head Island and the Low Country; he retired as volunteer in 2009. Lyman and his wife Anne, who died in October of 2011, were married for 68 years. He is survived his son, Dr. L Dwight Wooster (wife Tina) of Baltimore, MD, his two daughters, Nona W. Story (husband Mike) of Bluffton, SC and Anne W. Coon (husband Scott) of Charlotte, NC; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
