Obituary of Elwood J. Rice
Born in Oshawa, Canada to mother Helen Rutherford and father Clinton Rice, Woody along with his wife, Marion (Devitt), deceased, rose to great heights in the paper industry. He started at Howard Smith in Canada at age 13 then went to Hercules Paper and Powder in Wilmington, Delaware until retiring at age 65. Woody started the next day at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, completing his career as President of the Institute.
Woody was known throughout the world as the consummate salesman making many friends along the way.
Always ready to help people, sharing his time and philanthropy with many.
He was truly a renaissance man building furniture, fixing cars and had a wonderful knowledge of history. He loved country music and played the harmonica and banjo.
He was simply dynamic.
He is survived by his children; John Rice, Jane Rice, Jeffery Rice (Leslie); grandchildren Sally and Harry Rice, and cousin Elinore Saddler and children.
A memorial service will be held on June 16, 2023, at 10am at Providence Presbyterian Church.
