Obituary of Doris Green Teter

Doris Green Teter passed away peacefully on July 3, 2023, in Hilton Head, South Carolina. She was born on April 18,1921 in Salem, New Jersey to Dr. David W. Green and Doris Sneden Green.

Known to her friends as “Dory”, she graduated from Salem High School in 1938 and Bucknell University in 1942, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and remained an active alumna. Following graduation, Dory worked for N.W. Ayer & Son in Philadelphia. In 1946, Dory married the love of her life, Bob Teter, after a short engagement. They remained married for 65 years until Bob’s death. The couple followed Bob’s career in broadcast management to Devon, Pennsylvania; Darien, Connecticut; Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and then settled in Roanoke, Virginia; making lifelong friends along the way.

In her early years, Dory enjoyed breeding and raising English Setter show dogs for the American Kennel Club, with Gentleman Jim of Valley Run (aka “Jamie)” impressively showing at the Westminster Dog Show. She and Bob enjoyed hosting friends for social events and traveling the world. Some of Dory’s favorite activities included tennis, bridge, needlepointing, knitting, reading and jigsaw puzzles. Dory enjoyed sharing her needlework skills with others including making the kneeling benches for the Altar Guild at St. John’s Episcopal Church and establishing “Project Linus” chapters in Roanoke and Hilton Head, encouraging friends to knit baby blankets for newborns in need. In addition, she volunteered at the Shedd School, Better Business Bureau, American Red Cross, Art Museum of Roanoke Valley, Art League of Hilton Head, and The Salvation Army. She was a volunteer and member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Roanoke and later St. Luke’s Church in Hilton Head. Dory and Bob enjoyed spending part of the year in Hilton Head, and following her late husband’s death, Dory made the island her home.

Dory was predeceased by her husband; Robert Hain Teter and sister; Barbara Green Brooks. She is survived by two children; John David Teter (Patti) of Beaufort, S.C. and Robert Christopher Teter (Fran) of Charlotte, N.C., four grandchildren; Robert Townsend Teter of Charleston, S.C., William Russell Teter (Emily) of Charleston, S.C., Patricia Teter Hale (Alex) of Greensboro, N.C., Gordon Hain Teter of Chicago, IL, great-granddaughter Virginia Frances Hale and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
