Obituary of Brit Barker, III

It is with deep sadness that we announce the tragic death of Maynard Dorsey “Brit” Barker, III at the age of 59. Brit is now with his Lord Jesus Christ in Heaven.

Brit was born October 17, 1963, to Maynard D. Barker, Jr. and Marianne K. Barker in Atlanta, GA. He joined his paternal grandparents Maynard D. Barker, Sr. and Marinelle Barker, as well his maternal grandparents, George and Anne Knight. He is survived by his parents; his children, Maynard Dorsey Barker, IV and Abigail Michaela-Knight Barker; his brother, Kevin Michael Barker and his family; his sister, Angele Ashmore Bryant and her family, and many loving aunts and uncles.

Brit graduated from May River Academy and was known by many for being an all-star athlete, earning a place in the Hall of Fame for both football and basketball. He continued his athletic career at Georgia Southern as a punter for Coach Erk Russell’s Eagles. After college, Brit began his career in the insurance business with his father. He later became President of Coastal Plains Insurance and founded Coastal Plains Outdoors, combining his skills in insurance with his passion for the outdoors.

Brit volunteered his time as a football coach at Hilton Head Prep, where he had the opportunity to influence and develop men on and off the field. He instilled in his players that “attitude” was the most important aspect of sports and life.

Brit had an incredible ability to see what could be done and bring his visions and his dreams to life. Some of his happiest days and most fond memories were spent at Generostee Creek, his self-made sanctuary. It brought Brit immense joy to entertain his friends and family through hunting, fishing, and cooking.

Brit always looked out for people in hardship and helped the ”underdog” recognize their full potential. He was a kind man with a heart of gold, as well as a loving father, son, and loyal friend. He will be severely missed by friends, family, and business associates.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church on Thursday, August 10^th at 10 am with a Celebration of Life to follow.
