Obituary of Carol Ann Houlihan, R.N.

Carol Ann Houlihan, R.N. (née Phillips), Mrs. Carol Houlihan of Hilton Head Island, SC died on September 6, 2023 at The Pines where she had been a resident for several years. She was born August 13, 1937 in Hartford, CT to the late Henry and Thelma (Jones) Phillips. Beloved wife of the late Robert “Bob” Houlihan, M.D. Loving mother of R. Kevin (Susan) Houlihan of Orange, CT and Brian (Haydee Arias) Houlihan, loving grandmother of Kevin Arias and Sofi Houlihan. Carol was predeceased by her daughter Kathleen (Houlihan) Marsilio, brothers Richard, Bruce, and sister-in-law Shirley (Almstedt). She is survived by her sister Susan Phillips-Stack of Myrtle Beach, SC and sister-in-law Doris (Lagier) of DePeyster, NY, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Carol graduated from the Grace-New Haven Community Hospital School of Nursing in New Haven, CT and was head nurse of the premature nursery at the same hospital. She became one of the leading experts in neonatal intensive care, and was the catalyst for the first NICU in the United States. After retirement, Carol & Bob loved to travel and play golf together.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 29^th at 10:00 AM at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, Hilton Head Island. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
