Obituary of Louis E. Mahoney

Louis E. Mahoney III died in his home on June 30, 2023, in Hilton Head Island, SC. He was 91. A friend to all, Lou is remembered for his good humor, kindness, and outgoing nature.

Born in Boston, MA on March 12, 1932, to parents Irene and Louis Mahoney, Lou grew up in the Boston suburb of Melrose, MA. He graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1954 with a BS in Chemical Engineering and served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army from 1954-1957. He married his childhood sweetheart, Marie Murphy, on October 6, 1956, and they raised two children, Christine and James, in Stoneham, MA. The family later relocated to Morristown, NJ in 1981. Lou worked for Revere Sugar from 1957-1985 at which point he moved to Colgate Palmolive where he worked until he retired in 1996. Lou and Marie settled in Hilton Head Island following his retirement where he could pursue his love of golf and the sea.

An active member of his community, Lou dedicated himself to helping others throughout his life. He was a 4th degree knight in the Knights of Columbus and worked with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. During his time in Hilton Head, Lou supported the St. Francis Thrift Shop and was a devout parishioner of St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church.

A lifelong Boston fan, Lou could often be found sporting his Boston Bruins or Red Sox hats and never quite lost his Boston accent despite his many years down south. His sweet tooth was legendary, and he closed out every meal by saying “There’s always room for dessert!” His greatest joy, however, was his family. No birthday or anniversary passed without a card from Lou, and every server at his favorite restaurants was up to date on the latest news from the grandchildren.

Lou is survived by his wife, Marie; daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Gary Pritchard of Laconia, NH; son and daughter-in-law, James and Karen Mahoney of Hilton Head Island, SC; 6 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his younger brother Robert Mahoney of Peabody, MA.

A memorial will be held on October 13, 2023, at 10:00am at St. Francis by the Sea with a reception to follow in the church family center. All are welcome to attend to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Hospice Care of the Lowcountry.
