Oh, Grandpa you are missed! How very blessed I am to have had such a wonderful grandpa in my life. I have so many memories with you! Even though I can no longer give you a hug or see your smile that lit up any room, you are thought of often and will be remembered. The trips and times spent with you will always have a special place in my heart.
I’ve also inherited a few things from you. The most important, as you would agree, is a love of ice cream. One of my first memories is asking you for “the pink one grandpa” and eating strawberry ice cream on humid Hilton Head evenings. I loved to stand in line at the Ice cream shop and look at all the colors and flavors of ice cream. Endless options of joy! I think I know the real reason you chose the specific condo you did in Hilton Head. You wanted to sit on your porch and watch all the people go in and out of The Ice Cream shop happily enjoying one of your favorite things, ice cream.
Whenever Michael and I would come for our summer weekends, ice cream stops were a must. Whether it was at Gilles after a Brewer’s game or Kopps after golfing or being out and about we would often go out of the way, to my delight, to get a scoop of ice cream. Many times, grandma would chastise you saying, “you’re going to ruin their dinner” to which you would respond, “well we don’t know if we are going to die soon so we’d better eat dessert first!” Grandpa you knew how to enjoy the simple things of life and share it with those around you.
Not all things inherited are lovely like ice cream. I also inherited your tendency to get motion sickness. SeaBands and hard candy tucked in the door of your car usually helped the short trip. However, nothing could help us when we were in Hawaii on the Road to Hana. A must-see top of the tourist list item, grandma had planned this into our Maui trip of course. Beautiful tropical views and waterfall stops started us out well enough but way too soon the hairpin turns, and rollercoaster path of driving made you and I absolutely miserable causing you to exclaim, “This isn’t the road to Hana, it’s the road to hell!” We grabbed a black lava rock for your collection and wisely cut the tour early to save our stomachs and sanity.
Grandpa you always appreciated a good laugh or joke and I think you will still have us all laughing as we remember things you’ve told us or said. A few favorites are “always keep a couple $20s in your wallet”, “it’s only money”, “just eat it, it’ll put hair on your chest”, “If I felt any better, there’d be two of me”. I’m so thankful for the laughs and lessons you’ve taught me over the years. You and Grandma were a great example of what a healthy, Godly marriage should look like. You showed us how to work hard, love Jesus, and always made room for a smile or laugh.

Spring, 2007, grandpa drove me to West Lafayette, Indiana to tryout for the Purdue University Cheerleading team. We were coming from Chicago and tryouts were first thing in the morning, so we stayed overnight in a hotel just outside campus.
I was nervous. Really nervous. I don’t perform well under pressure and Purdue was my dream school. The stakes were high for 18-year-old Rebecca. When my turn came around, I took a deep breath and entered Mackey Arena. Tryouts were open for public viewing, and immediately I found grandpa a few rows up from the judges in the stands. Exhale.
I don’t remember my actual tryout except that it was a little less nerve-wracking knowing that grandpa was there watching.
Results were to be posted later that day so we had quite a while to wait. We chatted with the other cheerleaders, ate food, joked around, explored campus, and finally, the list was posted.
Back at Mackey there was a single sheet of paper slapped to the wall that held the fate of us all. I slowly squeezed my way through the huddle and ran my finger down the names one by one until— “Grandpa I made it!!!”
Grandpa, a few paces away, hands in pockets, said with a slight wink,
“Well what else did you expect?”
It was a great day. I had made the team! But looking back, it was a great day because it’s one of my favorite memories of time spent with my grandpa.
My grandpa believed in me and I am a better person today because of him.
Grandpa, I am so thankful for the time we got to spend together. When my children ask about you, I will tell them of the “take you to cheer tryouts, song singing, accordion playing, foot tickling, kitchen dancing, ice-cream eating, card game playing, leather jacket wearing, travel around the world, horseshoe crab catching, breakfast at George Webbs dining, golf club swinging, shrimp eating, grab a baseball cap we’re going to a Brewers game, take care of your family, God-fearing, most wonderful” grandpa that you are.
I love you. You are missed.

My dad passed away on Sunday, December 12 at home at the age of 90. The last ten years of his life he battled dementia and my mom did an extraordinary job of taking care of him!
My dad was my “ROCK”! He was my cheerleader, advisor, advocate, and supported me in all the big and small events of my life. He had a strong work ethic, taught me the value of money, the blessings of being generous, the importance of discipline, shaped my faith, and wow, did he have a gift with numbers! He had the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers in his head quicker than anyone I knew. My dad loved the game of golf and was golfing up until a few years ago. He was a great dancer, and he and my mom could light up the dance floor! He had a wonderful sense of humor too, and was always cracking jokes with family, friends, and waitresses! He always put a smile on my face even if it was another one of his “corny” jokes!
My dad loved his family and the Lord. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather! I am rejoicing that he is home with the Lord. He will be missed deeply, but I am blessed to have so many wonderful memories to cherish in my heart.
I love you Dad!
