I remember Lonnie as one of my older good looking cousins at the Ehrhart 4th of July picnics. His laughter was infectious. I am so sorry for your loss.

Lon was a loving husband and father. He always looked out for me and our daughter, Shannah. He always supported me in my education and career. He moved with me to Ohio, Michigan and Georgia even though he would preferred to stay in central Pennsylvania where he and I grew up and had friends and family.
Regardless of where we lived Lon always needed projects. He and his dad improved the house we lived in in Columbus, Ohio. When we moved with our four year old daughter to Michigan he purchased and old farmstead to restore. I had no doubt he could do the restoration because I saw all the changes Lon's dad had made to their home. When we moved to the farm we opted to live in the tenant house because it was in better shape than the farmhouse. We lived for at least a year with a radial arm saw in our kitchen as Lon worked to make the house more liveable. He also cared for our daughter while I did postdoctoral work at Michigan State. When I accepted a position at the Medical College of Georgia he had just begun to fix up the farmhouse. None the less he moved me and our daughter to Georgia and joined us shortly after he was able to rent the farm properties.
The retirement home we bought in South Carolina was also a "fixer upper" and Lon took a year to just remodel that house. Later he added a garage and family room. He planned each project in advance and was meticulous in every detail so projects took quite a bit of time. One of our neighbors dubbed Lon "tool man" because he was always willing to share his tools and expertise.
When we retired Lon surprised me when he said he wanted to return to the farmette in Michigan. He wanted to make some of the improvements to the property he always hoped to do. With the help of our dear friend, John Roll, so much was accomplished over the 20 years of our retirement that Lon died at peace.
Lon was a fighter to the very end. In spite of how weak and short of breath he became he always wanted to lighten my burden. He insisted on doing his own personal care and even on the day he died he pushed himself to get out of bed by himself and do his exercises. That day he was so weak I tried to convince him to let me empty his urine drainage bag. He wouldn't hear to it and struggled to empty it himself. He didn't spill a drop!
I miss you sweet man. I miss your hugs, love, companionship and subtle humor. I will even miss your constant projects.

We have known Lon for 50 years and it was always a delight to be around him despite our diverse opinions on many things. I remember well when he moved to Augusta, and he decided to make a career change from the classroom to silk printing. I knew Lon would adjust because he was meticulous in everything he did. I remember our many tennis matches and even playing with his dad who despite lacking a thumb on his racquet hand played well. Later Lon took up home remodeling which was his passion for the second half of his life. Anyone who bought a remodeled or new home that Lon built knew that no detail was overlooked and I'm sure it came mostly at expense of his profit margin. The most adventurous and memorial trip we ever took was with all the Ehrharts to the Soviet Union in 1989 just prior to the collapse of that government. Every time we got together, we laughed about all our fun experiences like finding the Wasa Park Hotel, to black market exchanges and finding a train ride back to Finland and so much more. Lon often had a winkle in his eyes, so you knew something was up when he was about to speak. He was very compassionate always concerned about the welfare of everyone everywhere, both man and animal. I was so privileged to have had the opportunity to visit with him just a few days before his passing. He expressed a very strong will to carry-on and finish his remodeling, but the Lord had other plans. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

You both are in our prayers and we trust God will comfort you during this time of grief.I wrote a lengthy tribute to Lon but somehow it didn’t post and I lost it all. I will try to recall it and send it by snail mail. Hope you are doing OK and if there is anything we can help you with, don’t hesitate to ask.

I only had the chance to get to know Lon for a few years and only met him a few times in Michigan and in Hilton-Head where he welcomed Ashley and I like we had been friends for many years.
I will never forget our daily first interactions, it usually went something like this:
Me: [‘morning Lon, how are you doing today?]
To which Lon always replied with an ironic smile, a whole lot of positivity and sometimes a discret little wink: [Oh… you know… I am mostly good!!] he said.
After getting to know him some more, I now know what this really meant. Lon certainly knew deep inside that he wasn’t doing all that great. And because of his undeniable integrity, he couldn’t just lie about it like most of us would simply reply “I am good! and you?”. But Lon would never complain and that’s why he used this very thought through positive phrase: “I am mostly good!”
Thank you Lon for your friendship and wisdom, I learned a lot from you! You were a good man. We’ll miss you! Sending some love to you Ina! À bientôt.

Lon graciously took a chance by hiring my 2 young sons to work with him on his farm. His patient teaching and mannerisms put them at ease allowing them to enjoy this new labor of love for care of lamas and hay baling. His kindness and work ethic impressed my sons. They respected him. For myself, I will remember visits in the kitchen with Lon and Ina after the rest of the gals in our Bible Study left. Lon's love and care for Ina was a beautiful thing I am honored to have witnessed.
