Obituary of Christina Powelson Sharp

Christina Powelson Sharp, 73, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, passed away at her home, peacefully in her sleep, January 29th, 2023. Christina was born October 28th, 1949, a daughter of the late George Wilson and Ellen Jane Powelson Sharp. 

 

She was a 1967 graduate of Zanesville High School, attended Ohio State University and graduated from Muskingum College with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. She was a 7th grade teacher at Maysville Junior High School in South Zanesville, Ohio, before becoming secretary and treasurer of her family's business. Christina was an avid golfer, earning numerous club championships at the Zanesville Country Club, and was an adept horse enthusiast. She was an advocate for women's rights and spent much of her time leading movements to ensure women's equality in private institutions across central Ohio. She was the author of Nothing Short of Miraculous, a book she published pertaining to her involvement in women's rights. 

 

Christina is survived by her son, Colburn Sharp McWherter of Hilton Head Island; two grandchildren, Clay Colburn McWherter and Ava Renee McWherter of Pickerington, Ohio; her sister, Marian Sharp Thompson of Anderson, South Carolina; her brother Fountain Ridgeway Sharp (Jaynellen) of Zanesville, Ohio; and the father of her son, Kent Colburn McWherter of Zanesville, Ohio.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Terry William Thompson.

 

Christina's wish was cremation and a celebration of life will be held in Zanesville, Ohio, and on Hilton Head Island at a later date. In remembrance of Christina, donations may be made to any battered woman's shelter.
